Civil Engineers are in so much demand especially in developing countries like India.
There are various government as well as private projects starting every year for which civil engineers are employed. Jobs are also available in countries like UAE and South Africa that offer good salary packages to fresher graduates as well. Candidates can apply for government opportunities through entrance exams of the respective organisations. In order to apply for the officers’ post in the field of civil engineering, one can appear for Indian Engineering Services (IES) exam.
Civil engineers can work for a number of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) such as NTPC, BHEL, ONGC, HAL, GAIL, SAIL, IOCL, BSNL and ISRO. Civil engineers are in high demand in municipal corporations as well. Apart from these, there are various government engineering departments that hire civil engineering graduates. If nothing else, those with a flair of business acumen can start their own construction business as well. As far as the job opportunities are concerned there are plenty of options to choose from.

To enter the civil services, you’ll need to crack the UPSC civil services exam, which is one of the toughest examinations in the world. Experts recommend preparing for at least a year before applying. The UPSC CSE exam is divided into two stages: Preliminary Examination, Mains (written exam + interview)
- Construction Engineer: A construction engineer is essential for successful completion of a project. There are several areas where a construction engineer works; some of these aspects which they look into are the designing of the drainage and the sewage system, construction of a building and transport ways such as a railroad and roads. They often look into the construction of commercial housing complexes, where they oversee the installation of electrical systems, plumbing, heating and air conditioning.
Average salary: On an average a construction engineer earns around Rs. 3,00,000 lakhs per year. The salary also depends on the company, where the construction engineer is working.
5. Environmental Engineer: Environmental engineers use various engineering techniques and methodologies to help minimise the impact on the environment. They study and use the principles of biology, physics and chemistry to help find solutions to environmental problems. Environmental engineers help in improving methods of recycling and waste disposal. They also deal with public health and work towards controlling pollution.
Average salary: On average, environmental engineers earn around Rs. 4,50,000 per year.
6. Material Science and Engineer: As the name suggests, material engineers work with various materials such as metals, ceramics, and plastics. Material engineers also develop, and test a wide range of materials. These materials can be used to create computer chips, to aircraft wings, golf clubs and biomedical devices such as CT scanners, surgical machines and many more.
Average salary: The average salary of a material science engineer is around Rs. 5,20,000 lakhs per year.
7. Look for internship: Often it becomes incredibly challenging to land a full-time job in a reputed company immediately after completing graduation. However, this is the best time to take on internships or apprenticeships.
