“Highest respect for womanhood” : Supreme Court Chief Justice SA Bobde. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice SA Bobde said on Monday that as an institution and court, we always give the highest respect to women. He also denied telling the rape accused to marry the victim. The bench headed by CJI said that we never asked any accused to marry the victim. We said, ‘Are you going to marry her?’ What we said in this case was completely misreported.
The CJI’s comments created panic all over . More than 4,000 women rights activists and progressive groups wrote an open letter in protest against the remark. The letter stated that the CJI should resign in the Supreme Court to ask a rapist to marry a victimized girl and justify marital rape.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the court’s statements were taken out of context and were distorted. If the statements will be staggered, it will mean something else. At the same time, the victim’s lawyer in the case said that there is a need to take steps for those trying to tarnish the institution. To this, the CJI said that our reputation is always in the hands of the bar. Now the next hearing in this case will be on 12 March.
Highest respect for womanhood
Actually , the 26-week pregnant 14-year-old rape victim has filed an appeal for abortion in the Supreme Court, which was heard by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court last week. A bench headed by the CJI had asked the Haryana government to submit a medical report to check if it would be safe for a 14-year-old girl. After this, the court fixed the next hearing of the case on 8 March.
The accused in the case had also filed a bail petition. During the trial last week itself, the court stayed the arrest of the accused for four weeks. The accused is a government employee, a technician in Maharashtra State Electricity Generation Company Limited. The accused argued that if he is arrested, he will lose his job.
The Supreme Court had said on this, ‘You should have thought this before molesting and raping the girl. You knew that you are a government employee, we are not forcing you to get married, let us know if you will, otherwise you will say that we are forcing you to marry him. ‘
