Food poisoning: Foxconn says will restructure TN unit management

After a recent instance of food poisoning, Foxconn Group, an Apple Inc supplier, has declared that it will restructure its local management team at the company’s site in Tamil Nadu’s Sriperumbudur town. Since the incident earlier this month, the unit has been closed.

Foxconn said in a statement posted on Wednesday that all employees will be paid while necessary modifications are made to resume operations. The company also stated that it will continue to support the employees as they return to work.

Women make up the majority of Foxconn employees in India.

“We’re also reorganising our local management team and management processes to ensure we can attain and maintain the required high standards,” the business added.

On December 18, food poisoning was detected at the Foxconn facility in Tamil Nadu, resulting in the hospitalisation of more than 150 employees.

“We have been analysing recent difficulties at our Sriperumbudur location in Tamil Nadu and have discovered that several offsite dormitory facilities do not match the appropriate criteria,” Foxconn added.

Large-scale protests followed the food poisoning event, with relatives of hospitalised staff and other workers blocking a crucial Chennai-Bengaluru motorway for several hours.

According to the police, approximately 70 women and 22 men were arrested for blocking the route. After 24 hours, the majority of the inmates were released.

Meanwhile, Apple Inc., which has placed the Sriperumbudur factory on probation, said on Wednesday that it will guarantee that all criteria are followed before reopening the facility, and that it will continue to closely monitor circumstances.
