The Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday that over 3,900 teaching posts are empty at constituent institutions of the University of Delhi, and over 3000 instructors are currently working on an ad hoc basis to fill those vacant posts.
The information was provided in a written response to a question in the House by Union Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar.
“A total of 3,959 teaching positions are vacant and 3,047 faculty members are currently working on a temporary basis in all institutions that make up the University of Delhi to fill these vacant teaching positions, ”added Sarkar.
Gargi College (216 vacancies), Janki Devi Memorial College (169 vacancies), Ramjas College (143 vacancies), Deshbandhu College (132 vacancies), and Sri Venkateswara College (132 vacancies) have the most vacancies (131).
A parliamentary committee report tabled in Rajya Sabha on Delhi University said that the university currently has 50.85 percent teaching positions and 68.81 percent non-teaching posts vacant. While Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced to the Lok Sabha that there are more than thirteen thousand teaching positions vacant in the central educational institutions. In central universities, only 7,839 of the 16,649 posts for reserved categories were filled. Due to a shortage of staff, DU has been unable to submit audit reports on time. The panel concluded that DU had submitted the annual report and audit accounts before the ministry of education on time only once in the last 30 years. Meanwhile, on December 17th, the Delhi University’s Executive Council (EC) decided to ask the university’s vice-chancellor, Yogesh Singh, that non-teaching contractual employees should be exempted from the preliminary tests of recruitment.
