Sunny Leone has spoken up about the tumultuous 2016 interview in which she was subjected to a torrent of insensitive and sexist questions by an experienced journalist. Sunny, who went on to gain a lot of public support after the incident, revealed in a recent interview that she was hurt by how it all went down and, in particular, that no one on the set thought to halt what was going on.
Sunny was interviewed for an English news programme by a veteran journalist in 2016. Many fans and industry insiders blasted the interviewer when it aired, accusing him of bullying Sunny and asking sexist questions. Sunny was also praised for retaining her cool throughout the interview and ‘handling it like a pro,’ according to the judges.
Sunny said in an interview with Bollywood Bubble regarding the incident and the public support she received thereafter, “These people despised me or spoke awful things about me for years, and suddenly someone bashes me on television.” And now I’m fine, and I’m accepted. I used to be the same person. They’re so great that they realise, “Hey, I’m a human.” But it was quite painful for me.” Sunny went on to say that she eventually calmed down and that she is now “thankful to everyone who stood up.”
The actor said that she even considered walking off the set at one point but then decided against it. “This was in the first 3-4 years of being here,” Sunny explained, “I thought I should observe respect if he is someone higher on the totem pole. And one should always respect their elders. So, I sat there. I wanted it to end. I almost got out of it. I was so close but then he said, ‘No no no, sit down’ so I said ok.”
Instead, the actor stated that she chose to approach the other cast members about why they did not interfere. “I was harmed on multiple levels as a result of this.” Following then, the most pressing question arose: there were rows of chairs and individuals seated in that room. ‘Did I do something to you people?’ I ask. Didg I cause you any discomfort? ‘Didn’t you think it was okay for you to come in and put a stop to it?’ You’ve known these folks for a long time, and not a single one of them thought it was wrong and that it needed to be stopped. “Not one,” Sunny stated emphatically.
Sunny is scheduled to make her debut as a leading lady in Tamil and Malayalam films this year with Veeramadevi and Rangeela. Helen and The Battle of Bhima Koregaon are two Hindi films in which she will appear.
