Navjot Singh Sidhu, the president of the Punjab Congress, asked Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chairman Sukhbir Singh Badal on Saturday to justify his closed-door meeting with Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota.
Badal and senior SAD leaders risked arrest outside chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s official residence in Chandigarh to protest the state government’s reported plan to arrest former minister Bikram Singh Majithia in a bogus drugs case.
Navjot Sidhu, who was in Amritsar for public rallies in his constituency, claimed that the SAD president had been lying to the media about his meeting with the DGP. “I’m not a backstabber,” says the character. Sumedh Singh Saini’s blue-eyed son, Sahota, should be able to establish that I met him (Sukhbir). Since the day he was appointed, I have been opposed to him (Sahota). Since the first cabinet meeting, I’ve brought up the subject of sacrilege. I’ll let everyone know when I meet him. After the public meetings, Sidhu held a press conference and declared, “It is your obligation to meet quietly in your farmhouses.”
He said that, unlike the Badals, he had no transportation, sand mine, or hotel. “You’re worried about raids by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).” The raids are being carried out against Fastway (a cable network), which I had been protesting. “Those who possessed the monopoly are being discovered to conduct transactions with your and your men’s accounts,” he stated.
Sidhu claimed that the Badals had robbed the state’s people for personal gain, in addition to acting as puppets in the hands of the national government. “Now the people will elect a government, and the advantages will be returned to the people,” he added.
