Karan Johar on performers who have yet to “prove themselves” and are wanting 30 to 35 crore: ‘They are completely delusory.’

In a recent interview, filmmaker Karan Johar expressed his dissatisfaction with performers who raise their salaries despite failures and new, youthful actors who seek hefty remuneration.

“I’m sick of it. In a debate, Karan stated, “I’ve seen performers’ prices grow for no reason during the darkest period of cinema.” Karan discussed how performers increased their fees during the epidemic despite the fact that the films were not earning well in the Producers Adda 2021 for Film Companion.

“There was a certain amount.” It’s finally here, three months later (gestures at a higher level than before). But why is that? They hadn’t released anything in a long time, and their most recent attempt was a flop. Their films haven’t taken off, but they’re still doing well because of the digital money. Their managers or whatever they have tell them that digital gives them this much and music earns that much. But who creates these graphs? They’ve gone completely insane, I’m afraid. We’ll just have to put up with it and work with them.”

He went on to add that “younger” stars expect huge payments, and that all he wants to do is show them their box office “report cards”: “I understand there are megastars with whom you make these deals. What I don’t get is why there is a newer generation of actors that have yet to show themselves at the box office. ‘What are these numbers?’ I ask as soon as I hear 25-30-35 (crore rupees). Then you should offer them that report card and say, “Hello, here is what I open to.” This is exactly what your video accomplished.”

“Pay the writer, pay the cinematographer, pay the editor!” Karan said after his co-panelist Zoya Akhtar addressed the wage disparity between performers and technicians, calling it “offensive.” I’d rather pay top dollar – much more – to the people of your technical staff who contribute so much to the success of your film. Films have been saved by editors and cinematographers. And I agree with Zoya that I look in the mirror and wonder, “Why am I paying this actor 15 billions but my editor 55 lakhs?” It doesn’t make sense to me. But it’s all of a sudden become the market standard.”
