Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel’s next summer blockbuster, is still four months away from release, but talk is already rife about what fresh twists the film will add to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, rumours about new lines of toys related to the film have suggested that at least three new villains will appear in the film.
The Doctor Strange sequel picks up where Spider-Man: No Way Home left off. Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) will be shown dealing with the fallout from his disastrous No Way Home spell, which fragmented the cosmos. The concept of the multiverse has also been addressed in two Disney+ programmes, Wandavision and Loki. Because of the MCU Phase 4’s multiversal structure, fans speculated that the film would have numerous forms of the same characters.
The teaser for the film, which was released last month, reinforced this with a glimpse of what appears to be an evil Doctor Strange. However, action figurines from the Marvel Legends series, which are released as film tie-ins, now depict a third form of the character. The character, known as Defender Strange, appears to be from a different universe from the ones revealed thus far.
What’s most intriguing about the goods lineup is that it teases newer villains. Master Mordo, a variation of Mordo, the wizard character played by Chiwetel Ejiofor in the first film, is another action figure in the Marvel Legends collection. Master Mordo and Baron Mordo have frequently appeared as enemies in Doctor Strange comics.
The Multiverse of Madness Lego Toys series also promises two new monster antagonists, Shuma-Gorath and Gargantos. Shuma Gorath is a one-eyed squid-like monster. In the Disney+ animated series What If?, the character made a cameo appearance. However, while one toy line refers to the tentacled monster as Shuma-Gorath, another refers to him as Gargantos. Doctor Strange and two other characters are shown duelling it on the toy’s box. Gargantos and Shuma-Gorath have both appeared as significant villains in Marvel comics.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theatres on May 6, and it is likely that Marvel will release at least one more trailer before the film’s premiere, which may introduce or hint at some of these characters. Sam Raimi directed the picture, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Xochitl Gomez, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
