PM Modi presided over a nearly two-hour high-level conference to assess the country's public health readiness and immunisation posture for Covid-19.
In light of worldwide worry over omicron, a recently found strain of the coronavirus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi instructed officials to reconsider plans to remove restrictions on overseas travel on Saturday.
The Prime Minister made the remarks after chairing a nearly two-hour high-level meeting to examine the country’s public health readiness and vaccination-related circumstances for Covid-19.
The ramifications for India were also examined as officials briefed PM Modi about omicron, its properties, and the impact witnessed in other countries, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. “In light of the new version, the PM stressed the importance of being proactive.”
People must be extra cautious in light of the new threat, according to the PM, and proper procedures such as disguising and social separation must be taken. “The PM emphasised the importance of closely monitoring all overseas arrivals and testing them according to protocols, with a particular focus on nations listed as ‘at risk,'” the PMO said in a statement.
In light of the new evidence, the PM also requested officials to reassess plans for reducing international travel restrictions,” according to the statement.
The meeting came amid concerns about omicron, a novel coronavirus variety initially discovered in South Africa and claimed to have a large number of mutations by specialists. According to them, omicron could be more vaccine resistant, more transmissible, and have major public health ramifications.
Following the finding of the novel mutation in Botswana, Hong Kong, Israel, and Belgium, governments from the United States to Hong Kong strengthened restrictions on travel from southern African countries.
India has also added numerous nations to the list of countries where visitors must take extra precautions upon arrival, including post-entry infection testing.
Hong Kong and Israel have been added to the list of countries by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
As he examined the national situation relative to infections and test positivity rates, the Prime Minister was also updated on global trends on Covid-19 infections and cases.
He also told officials to work closely with state administrations to ensure that everyone in the state and district is informed of what’s going on. According to the PMO statement, “he requested that intensive containment and active surveillance be continued in clusters reporting higher cases, and that technical support be provided to states currently reporting higher instances.”
Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, NITI Aayog Member (Health) VK Paul, home secretary AK Bhalla, health secretary Rajesh Bhushan, and other key officials attended the meeting.
