Punjab BJP in-charge Gajendra Singh Shekhawat stated on Friday after meeting with former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh that Amarinder Singh’s party, the Punjab Lok Congress, will fight the assembly election in alliance with the BJP. Amarinder Singh also announced the union on Twitter, with a photo of him and Gajendra Singh hugging. “For the 2022 Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections, we have publicly announced a seat adjustment with the BJP,” Amarinder Singh tweeted.
“We are prepared, and we will win this election.” Seat-sharing decisions will be made on a seat-by-seat basis, with winnability taking precedence. “We are quite certain of winning this election,” Amarinder Singh stated.
Punjab is set to hold elections next year, and what makes the election more exciting is the state’s political evolution during the last six months. The Congress high leadership urged Amarinder Singh to resign as chief minister after Congress MLAs revolted against him. Following the ‘insult,’ Singh resigned from the Congress and founded the Punjab Lok Congress. The door to forming an alliance with the BJP was always open, with the only stumbling block being Amarinder Singh’s opposition to the three agricultural legislation from the start. With the Centre removing such regulations just days before the Punjab poll, Singh’s path to an alliance with the BJP became apparent.
The BJP will be the senior partner in the coalition, and it is expected to fight more seats than the Punjab Lok Congress.
Apart from the BJP-Punjab Lok Congress alliance, the AAP factor will be important in the forthcoming election, as Arvind Kejriwal’s party is campaigning hard in the state.
Instead of current Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, the Congress is likely to choose Navjot Sidhu, the party’s Punjab unit’s leader, as the CM face.
