Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, one of India’s most well-known classical musicians, is credited with bringing the Jammu and Kashmir folk instrument santoor on the international scene. Along with flautist Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia, he straddled the world of Indian cinema as one half of the famed Shiv-Hari composer team.

Silsila, Lamhe, Chandni, and Darr were among the films for which they wrote music. In 1986, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, then the Padma Shri in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001.

On his blog, Amitabh penned a heartfelt tribute to Shivkumar Sharma. “There is the passing away of the Maestro, ShivKumar Sharma, who played the santoor, a unique instrument from Kashmir’s valleys… who composed so many film scores for me and others… continuing success after success numbs you from the anguish of pain… as well as the opposite… Shivkumar ji, who embodied the’santoor’ in all of its glory.. who put his heart and soul into everything he did.. humble despite his immense presence.. and a genius’s talent. A sad end for the master of the string instrument… he and the renowned flautist Hari Prasad Chaurasia ji were a film music duo…He wrote, “I played recorded and departed.”
