In the aftermath of the introduction of the novel variant Omicron, Niti Aayog member Dr VK Paul has raised concern about the rise in the number of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases around the world. Dr. Paul spoke at a news conference on Friday about the alarming growth of illnesses in Europe, comparing it to the population of India.
“If we look at the scale of transmission in the UK and a similar outbreak occurs in India, there will be 14 lakh cases every day,” Dr Paul warned.
He went on to say that Omicron is suspected of being behind the spread, but that this is still a “developing and unanticipated scenario” that the government is monitoring.
“The Omicron strain is thought to induce mild illness,” Dr. VK Paul stated.
It is also impossible to sequence the genome of every sample, according to the Niti Aayog member.
“It is not possible to sequence the genomes of all samples. As of present, it is a surveillance and pandemic assessment and tracking tool rather than a diagnostic tool. We can guarantee that sufficient systematic sampling is being carried out “Dr. Paul stated.
On Friday, Britain reported 3,201 cases of the new variant, the biggest daily increase since Omicron was detected in the country, taking the total such cases to 14,909, according to official figures.
According to UKHSA data, the country registered 93,045 coronavirus cases in the most recent 24-hour period, shattering the daily record for the third day in a row and increasing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 11,190,354.
So far, 113 instances of the Omicron form of coronavirus have been reported in India, spread over 11 states and union territories. On Friday, twenty-six of these cases were reported.
With 40 cases, Maharashtra tops the pack, followed by Delhi with 22, Rajasthan with 17, Telangana and Karnataka with eight each, Gujarat and Kerala with seven, and Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Chandigarh with one apiece.
Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Health, who spoke at the press briefing, stated that the Omicron variety has been discovered in 91 nations throughout the world.
On November 25, the Omicron variation was initially reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) by South Africa. According to the WHO, the first confirmed B.1.1.529 infection was discovered in a sample obtained on November 9 of this year.
The novel strain was given the name ‘Omicron’ by the WHO on November 26. The significantly altered strain was also labelled as a ‘variant of concern’ by the World Health Organization.
